On July 28th 1995 US Congressman Steve Schiff released the results of the General Accounting Office's (GAO) audit on US government involvement in the Roswell Incident. The audit reported that a high altitude weather balloon was recovered from the crash site near Roswell New Mexico in 1947-not an extra terrestrial ship. The GAO requested information on the Roswell Incident from the White House, the FBI, the Department of Energy and the National Security Council. The GAO discovered that all administrative records and outgoing messages from the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) between March 1945 and December 1949 had been destroyed. The GAO estimates that the documents were destroyed 40 years ago and were unable to determine who destroyed them. The GAO uncovered a FBI teletype and an internal document from the RAAF that referred to a recovery of a weather balloon from the Roswell area in July 1947. These findings were later supported by the release of declassified information from the US Air Force in 1997 explaining that the crash material was from a high altitude balloon used in secret tests. UFO researchers found it alarming that the documents pertaining to the Roswell Incident were destroyed. Researchers also believed that the GAO did not press hard enough to get all the facts and documentation from US government organizations associated with the Roswell Incident. US Congressman Steve Schiff began to become interested in the Roswell Incident early in the 1990's when his constituents requested he find out what really happened in Roswell, New Mexico (July 1947). In January of 1994, Congressman Schiff announced to various members of the press that he had been getting the 'run-around' when trying to press the US Defense Department for information on the Roswell Incident. Soon afterward, he requested that the GAO investigate the government's involvement in the Roswell Incident. The release of the GAO audit on the Roswell Incident was unable to put an end to the rumours of a massive government cover-up of a crashed extra terrestrial ship. In fact this audit merely added to the mystery surrounding the Roswell Incident.
